Pangeos – The Future of the Sea

From yachts to super yachts, the designers at Lazzarini Design House have now took what we know of sea vessels even further with their futuristic terayacht proposal – Pangeos.
The idea began in 2009 when designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini created a vision of a yacht structure capable of hosting an entire city. The name itself taken from the supercontinent that existed millions of years ago, Pangeos now translates into what the future of travel could actually look like.
The turtle shaped vessel is set to become the world largest floating structure, estimated at $8 billion to construct. The ‘floating city’ showcasing why it will cost millions, will be made up of various hotels, shopping centres, parks and even ship and aircraft ports. All whilst providing facilities to accommodate up to 60,000 guests on the ocean.
The Details
Pangeos is set to be 1,800 feet long and 2000 feet at its widest point – the wings. The gigantic vision starts from the entrance of the port area to the main square which would extend into a wide terraced villa. This then leading to private housing, buildings, rooftop terraces and an upper ‘shell’ offering landing to various aircrafts. The lower spaces will house 30,000 compartments and provide an unsinkable floating area compromised of mainly steel.
The terayacht will be equipped with 9 HTS engines, each powered by various inboard energy sources. The structure will hope to cruise at a speed of 5 knots pushed from a jet drive transmission. Without an end destination, Pangeos will cruise constantly around the ocean without emissions. Further adding to the future of sustainable travel, the rooftop area will also be lined with solar panels, providing the necessary clean energy to power the enormous vessel.
Vision to Reality
Due to the scale and size of the design there is currently no place that exists to facilitate the task of construction. Designers have suggested Saudi Arabia, a port less than 100 miles from Jeddah as an ideal location. Although, around one square kilometre of sea would need to be dredged and a circular dam constructed before commencing the build.
The Italian designers are hopeful construction could start in 2033, with a build time of around 8 years. Taking this from design to reality, is a crowdfunding initiative involving NFT’s and cryptocurrency. The idea is that you can buy anything from a virtual ticket to a hotel room or super villa onboard via NFT (non-fungible token). The virtual property using cryptocurrency will then act as a deposit for a physical property if and when Pangeos comes to fruition.
